Uma das idéias que emergem dos recentes alertas sobre terrorismo feitos pelo secretário de Justiça dos EUA John Ashcroft é de que a Al-Qaeda, ao tramar um novo grande ataque em solo norte-americano, espera afetar o resultado das eleições presidenciais dos EUA em novembro. Na cabeça de Ashcroft, seria uma versão para as Américas do que ocorreu em Madri, em 11 de abril deste ano, quando Jose Maria Aznar foi derrotado após tentar manipular os atentados da Al-Qaeda.

Para os conservadores, as implicações disso seriam inversas nos EUA. Republicanos sugerem que qualquer movimento de oposição ao presidente George W. Bush e sua guerra no Iraque são esforços para conciliar com os terroristas. Nesse contexto, qualquer política mais flexível que a adotada por Bush seria considerada uma arriscada concessão aos terroristas.

Trata-se de uma noção perversa que pede uma resposta inteligente dos progressistas do EUA. Todos aqueles que se opõem à desastrosa política externa da atual administração precisam fazer uma forte declaração pública aos terroristas — que pensam que ficarão melhor sem o presidente Bush e aos conservadores que tentam manipular a situação para obter ganhos políticos. É o que faz o jornalista Mark Engler, diretor do projeto Democracy Uprising. Para Engler, caso acontecesse um atentado, os progressistas deveriam fazer uma declaração pública contra o terrorismo, nos seguintes termos:

“Para Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda e seus aliados terroristas,

Os progressistas nos EUA e no resto do mundo abominam vocês. Nós iremos derrotá-los.

Iremos derrotá-los unindo o mundo contra vocês ao invés de separar nossos aliados com arrogância unilateral. Derrotaremos vocês mantendo uma constante e bem focada caça aos criminosos que cometeram crimes horríveis contra a humanidade. Faremos da tarefa de parar suas operações uma preocupação sem fim, e não desviaremos a atenção para guerras preemptivas em busca de objetivos políticos.

Derrotaremos vocês acabando com as invasões que inflam o ódio anti-americano e garantem a vocês fontes de novos recrutas. Derrotaremos vocês encontrando uma solução justa para o conflito palestino ao invés de endorsar as políticas extremistas de Ariel Sharon. E derrotaremos vocês ao relembrar nosso comprometimento de auxiliar na reconstrução do Afeganistão.

Iremos derrotá-los com um programa de inteligência baseado em fatos e não baseado em fé, e contando a verdade para nosso próprio povo e à comunidade internacional. Não iremos nos vingar de quem expuser nossas mentiras revelando a identidade de agentes secretos engajados na tarefa de parar transferências ilícitas de armas.

Iremos derrotá-los revertendo a negligência passada com os estoques nucleares da antiga União Soviética durante a Guerra Fria, que hoje representa a maior oportunidade que vocês têm de colocar as mãos em armas nucleares. Faremos grandes esforços e investimentos para descartar esse material, colocando-o fora de alcançe para sempre.

Derrotaremos vocês nos opondo a todos os ditadores e não formando alianças com eles quando conveniente. Apoiaremos movimentos pelos direitos humanos ao redor do mundo. Seremos solidários com os que oferecem resistência local à opressão. Iremos ajudá-los nos esforços de criar democracia duradoura e participativa nos seus países.

Derrotaremos vocês apoiando os fabricantes e tornando fora da lei a venda de armas a tiranos. Vamos resgatar integralmente os princípios da Convenção de Genebra e trabalhar com determinação para acabar com todo tipo de tortura. Reafirmaremos os mecanismos da justiça internacional. Acabaremos com a oposição dos EUA ao Tribunal Penal Internacional, o Tratado de Minas Terrestres, e o tratado para banimento dos testes nucleares. Faremos os EUA comprometer-se com o tratado anti-mísseis balísticos e apoiar um acordo da ONU sobre armas de pequeno porte. Daremos passos sinceros rumo ao desarmamento nuclear, ao invés de construir novas e mais poderosas armas nucleares.

Derrotaremos vocês eliminando as diferenças sociais e o desespero que acaba ajudando as operações de vocês. Iremos prover uma verdadeira ajuda externa aos países necessitados sem demandar a privatização de suas economias nem a permissão para que nossas corporações entrem nos mercados. Criaremos um sistema de comércio baseado no trabalho justo e na forte proteção do meio-ambiente, um sistema que leve em consideração a diversidade e as necessidades. Derrotaremos vocês lutando por um mundo sem Império.

Iremos nos opor ao que vocês acreditam promovendo os direitos das mulheres ao redor do mundo. Iremos oferecer assistência às organizações feministas de base e apoiar as redes da sociedade civil.
